About

Sort your list in alphabetical, natural, reverse, or random order with ease using this tool.

Sorting Method

There are three different ways of sorting text lines using this tool.

  • Alphabetical order - Alphabetical sorting is the traditional way a computer sorts text. Each character is compared in order, and the string whose first letter comes earlier in the alphabet (A-Z) comes first. This also applies to numbers (0-9).

  • Natural order - Natural sort is considered a more human-friendly implementation of machine alphabetical sorting. Non-single-digit numbers like "10", "11", "12", and above are considered as a single entity and ordered by the value of the number. This is what you should use if you're working with numbered lists.

  • By Character Length - You can sort a list based on the length/width of the text. Strings with shorter character length come first in the list, and the longest comes last.

Basic Examples

Alphabetical sort - In the given example below, "A10" comes first before "A2" because the character 1 is compared before the character 2.

A1
A10
A2

Natural sort

A1
A2
A10

Character Length

A
AA
AAA

Reverse

Using this option reverses the order of the text.

Example: Reversed after sorting by character length.

AAA
AA
A

How to Sort a List in Descending Order

Texts are sorted in ascending order by default. If you want to sort a list in descending order (9-0 and Z-A), you can use the reverse option after sorting it alphabetically or naturally.

Update: You can now sort in descending order directly by using Z-A option.

How to Sort a List Randomly

You can sort text in no particular order by using Shuffle. Basically, it randomizes the arrangement of the list.

Sort text lines by alphabet, natural numeric order, or length. Organize labels and numbered names without changing the text inside each line.

How to use

Paste one item per line, choose the sort method and case setting, and sort. Use natural order for labels containing numbers.

Example

Alphabetical order puts A10 before A2 by comparing characters. Natural order puts A2 before A10 by reading the numeric part as a number.

FAQ

Does Reverse mean descending sort?

Reverse flips the current list. For a descending alphabetical or natural result, select the corresponding sort direction.

A practical task

Use natural order for labels such as Part 2 and Part 10, but ordinary alphabetical order for a lexical index. Check case behavior when uppercase codes and lowercase words appear together. The correct method depends on how readers will find an item.

Another useful question

Does sorting remove duplicate entries?

No. Ordering and deduplication are separate operations. Decide if repeats matter, then use the duplicate line tool only when removing them is appropriate.
